Donato Amstutz

Contrary to photo and video, the common means of visual art today with which “reality” becomes “image” at the moment, Amstutz places stitch after stitch, by hand, into his grid fields in a temporally extended process. In this process, the artist deals with photography and other graphic productions and techniques by “sewing” newspaper pictures, book reproductions, packaging, etc., or by taking up the dialogue as a sticker with the technical reproduction. With an ancient craft he reproduces reproductions and popular, banal graphics. This pictorial method is familiar to us from Pop Art.

With this embroidery technique, however, Amstutz realizes a paradox that is described for the age of the crisis of craftsmanship. The viewer associates “being” and instantaneous “reality” with photography and “becoming” with embroidery. Photo and embroidery together, however, make “transience” perceptible in Amstutz’s
